Sala Thong
A Thai restaurant on Newnham Road, serving since 2008.
Sala Thong is a Thai restaurant at 37 Newnham Road. Its own website says it has been open in Cambridge since 2008 and describes the aim as a quiet table for honest Thai cooking, close to the river.
What it serves
The menu pages highlight a short run of signature dishes, which the restaurant says are pounded by hand each morning. They include prawn pad Thai with tamarind-glazed rice noodles, a green coconut curry with prawns and Thai herbs, and soft-shell crab tempura served with a spicy mango salad. Grilled steak with herbs and a spicy dipping sauce appears under the name Tiger Cry, while chargrilled pork skewers come with sticky rice. To drink, there is Thai iced tea, served over ice with a metal straw.
Practical notes
Table reservations can be made through the website. Service is split between lunch and the evening from Monday to Saturday, with the kitchen taking a break in the afternoon. On Sundays it opens through the day, from midday until 9pm. The restaurant is a short walk from the Newnham end of town, so it suits a meal after a walk across the meadows or a visit to the colleges on the west bank.
