Life on a Bike describes itself as an independently owned bike shop on the broadway section of Mill Road, at number 171. The sign on the website is plain: sales, service and repairs, with advice for anyone who wants it.
What it sells
New bikes come from Bergamont, Dawes, Forme and Squish Kids, among others, covering gravel, mountain, city and traditional styles. Alongside them sits a range of accessories and clothing from a long list of makers, including Continental, Giro, Park Tool, Santina, Schwalbe, Shimano, SKS, SRAM, Tortec and Vittoria. The shop also takes part in the cycle to work scheme.
The workshop
The workshop deals with road bikes, kids' bikes, commuting hybrids, town bikes, mountain bikes and fixies, and the shop says its mechanics are Cytech qualified. It aims to finish most repairs the same day or within 24 hours, subject to parts being available.
Prices are posted openly. A puncture repair is from 6 pounds plus the tube, a wheel true is 14 pounds plus any spokes, a bottom bracket replacement starts at 15 pounds plus parts, and bike assembly starts at 30 pounds. A basic service is 35 pounds and a main service 45 pounds, with parts extra and further costs on request.
Practical notes
The shop is open Tuesday to Saturday, from half past nine until half past four. Phone ahead on 01223 576545 if you need to check a repair slot.
