Local's tip

No booking is needed for repairs: the shop says you can just bring the bike in.

Bicycle Ambulance is a bike shop and workshop in Unit 2 of the Enterprise Centre, 61 Ditton Walk. Its homepage lists bicycle repairs, servicing, sales, restorations, custom builds, wheel builds, parts and accessories, and carries the line that there is no need to book: just bring in your bike.

How it started

The business says it came together when like-minded enthusiasts wanted a bicycle business that concentrated on components and quality of repair rather than simply turning bikes over. The first form was an actual ambulance converted into a mobile workshop, which visited workplaces so that people did not have to find time to reach a shop. The shop in Cambridge opened in 2007 alongside the ambulance. The visits stopped during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the business now concentrates on the shop.

What it does

The shop's stated ethos is repairing rather than replacing components. It builds bicycles to order, whether fixed gear, touring, gravel, commuter or road, and builds custom wheels. In 2017 it took over the Freshtripe webshop, which sells bicycle brands and hand-built wheels, and it also offers its mechanical skill to other shops when needed. Separate pages cover the workshop, repairs and service, wheel building and custom bikes, and a blog is kept on the site.

Practical notes

The shop describes itself as a place to gather as well as a workshop, for advice before a ride or just a conversation. It is at the Enterprise Centre, 61 Ditton Walk. Phone 01223 953130. The website does not state opening hours.
