The Cambridge Blue
A freehouse for real ale, cider and Belgian beer in the streets behind Mill Road.
The Cambridge Blue is a freehouse at 85-87 Gwydir Street, in the terraced streets of Petersfield. Its own website calls it one of Cambridge's enduring institutions and a real ale paradise, and the numbers back up the ambition: up to 14 real ales, 12 keg beers and seven real ciders on at once.
What is on the bar
The regular cask beers come from XT Brewery, Adnams and Nene Valley, with a rotating line-up from other local breweries beside them. Ciders and perries are a particular strength, and the pub reports winning Cambridge's cider and perry pub of the year award in 2012 and 2016. Behind the bar sit more than 70 single malt whiskies and over 20 gins, and the fridges hold hundreds of Belgian and other European bottled beers, including a large Trappist selection. Wines come from a local merchant.
Food and garden
Food is served daily by a kitchen company that the pub says is run by Cambridge locals. Orders are placed through QR codes on the tables, and kitchen hours run until 20:45 on Monday to Thursday, 21:45 on Friday and Saturday and 19:45 on Sunday. Sunday roasts are bookable by email. The pub also has a garden, which it reopens each summer.
Practical notes
Opening hours are 12:00 to 23:00 Monday to Saturday and 12:00 to 22:30 on Sunday. The same management runs two other pubs, the Royal Standard on Mill Road and the Blue Moon. The phone number is 01223 471680.
