Al Casbah is a restaurant at 62 Mill Road, on the long shopping street that runs through Petersfield and Mill Road. Its website says it opened in 1997 and is run as a family business, handed from a father to his five sons. The food is North African and Levantine.

On the menu

The cooking centres on a charcoal grill. Dishes listed on the site include lamb brochettes, lamb cutlets, kafta, merguez sausages, grilled chicken shawarma and a fish of the day, all served with rice or chips and salad. From the kitchen come a lamb tagine with prunes and apricots, and a couscous royale with chicken, lamb, merguez and chickpeas. Starters range from hummus topped with grilled lamb and baba ghanoush to felafel and a spinach and feta bourek, and there is a cauliflower steak for vegetarians. The menu shows grill dishes priced between about £15.95 and £24.95.

Practical notes

You can reserve a table or order online through the website, and it also sells gift cards and mentions a new food truck. The family opened a sister restaurant, Bedouin, a short way up the road in 2011. The phone number is 01223 579500. The site does not list opening hours, so confirm before travelling for a late meal.
