The Panton Arms is a pub at 43 Panton Street, south of the centre among Victorian terraced houses. It is known as a regular haunt of scientists from the university's engineering and chemistry departments, and it gave its name to a statement about open scientific data.

The Panton Principles

In June 2009 a group of scientists began drafting guidance on licensing and labelling openly published research data, working over drinks in the pub. They released the result in February 2010 as the Panton Principles, and the pub's name has been attached to them ever since. What survives is a corner of an old brewery site, once its tap room.

Drinks, music and dogs

The pub's own website describes a traditional, dog-friendly local with a courtyard garden. The bar carries two regular cask ales, St Austell's Tribute and Greene King IPA, together with two rotating guest ales, plus a range of keg lagers, ciders, wines, gins and gluten-free and alcohol-free bottled beers. Dogs are welcome both in the courtyard and inside, and water and treats are kept behind the bar.

A weekly Irish folk jam usually runs on Thursdays from early evening with free entry, and there is usually live music on the last Saturday of the month. Two large screens show terrestrial sport, including the rugby and international football. The pub can get very busy at peak times, so the site recommends booking ahead for drinks by email.

The pub's phone number is 01223 464351. Menus are on the pub's website, and events are announced on the pub's social media.
