The Stephen Perse Foundation began as a girls' school in 1881 and now describes itself as a family of independent schools educating ages 1 to 18 in Cambridge and the surrounding area. Its name looks back to the same seventeenth-century benefactor as The Perse School, though the two organisations run separately.

From girls' school to foundation

The school's history page gives 1881 as the start, under the name of the Perse School for Girls. The present name came in 2007, and a co-educational sixth form opened the following year. Its own website says the school became fully co-educational in 2017. A school at Saffron Walden, Dame Bradbury's, joined in 2013, which is why the group's early years provision stretches across Cambridge, Madingley and Saffron Walden.

Where it is

The Cambridge senior school stands on Union Road, close to the centre of the city and a short way along from the university's science departments. The Foundation's website also mentions a boarding house, and the group has junior and early years sites elsewhere in the city.

Practical notes

Entry points, fees and the dates of open events vary by section, so the Foundation's own website is the place to start. Prospective families should check each site's address, because the group's schools are spread across several locations.
