St Mary's is a girls' school run in the Catholic tradition. Its own website says it takes girls aged 3 to 18, with a preschool, junior school, senior school and sixth form, and day and boarding places.

A school with a founder's name

The school was founded in 1898 by sisters working in the Mary Ward tradition, and the school's website still calls it a Mary Ward school. In 1904 they bought The Elms on Bateman Street, a house once owned by a Regius Professor of Greek, and added Paston House in 1909. Old girls are known as Pastonians after that second house.

The junior section has its own story: it closed in 1987, reopened under a different name run by parents, and returned to the fold as the school's junior section in 2007.

Where it is

The school is split between three nearby sites, all close to the University Botanic Garden. Sports facilities are a short way off, with a boathouse for rowing on the Cam. Boarding moved in 2016 into a house on Brooklands Avenue, named after Mary Ward.

Practical notes

Boarding is offered for full, weekly or flexible stays. Admissions contacts, term dates and open visits are on the school's website.
