Mercado Central occupies a historic townhouse at 24 Green Street, in the middle of the city. It calls itself an independent, produce-driven restaurant, with dishes built around ingredients from the British Isles and Spain.

The menu and wine

The restaurant says it buys from specialist, small-scale suppliers with sustainable, high-welfare practices, and that its Spanish-influenced menus follow the seasons. Three things are always on the boards: wild Cornish fish, acorn-fed Iberico pork and grass-fed British beef. The wine list is given equal weight. It covers all of Spain, with most of the bodegas available by the glass and some rarer varieties sourced as they turn up. Separate pages carry the a la carte, set lunch and wine menus.

The house

Diners can sit in the informal open kitchen or in the upstairs dining rooms, and there is room for large groups and business dinners. When the weather allows, a few tables go outside on Green Street.
