From Market Hill To Sidney Street City Centre 2 places listed

This is a shopping street in the middle of the city, starting at Market Hill, the site of the central market square, and finishing at Sidney Street. Beyond the square, the same line carries on westwards under the name St Mary's Street, passing the University Church. Petty Cury, pedestrianised, lies to the south, and Market Passage to the north.

Buildings

At the eastern end, on the corner with Sidney Street, stands Holy Trinity Church, a Perpendicular building of c1400. Close by is Henry Martyn Hall, named after the priest and missionary of that name. Its architect was Edward Schroeder Prior, an Arts and Crafts designer who had trained under Norman Shaw; it went up in 1885-87, and the ground floor is in commercial use.

Radcliffe Court, finished in 1964 and designed by Stanley R. Nevell & Partners, puts flats above a row of shops that look onto Market Square.

Around it

Across Sidney Street, Hobson's Passage leads east towards Hobson Street. Together with Sussex Street this corner is a useful way through to the eastern side of the centre.
