Sussex Street is a pedestrianised shopping street. It runs north-east from Sidney Street as far as the meeting of King Street with Hobson Street. Sidney Sussex College fronts onto Sidney Street to the north, and Hobson's Passage runs parallel on the south side.

A planned street

The line of the street is much older than anything on it; the original route dates back to the medieval period at least. The buildings seen today were conceived for the college as a development mixing shops and other uses, and went up between 1928 and 1939, shortly before the Second World War. They are neo-Georgian in style. The architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner described the street as the "best piece of pre-war urban planning at Cambridge".

Landmarks

On the corner with Sidney Street stands Montagu House, a tall, distinctive Grade II listed building. A covered bridge links the two sides of the street.

Sussex Street gives a quiet shopping route between Sidney Street and King Street, away from the busier lanes around the market.
