Fen Causeway
A 1920s link road over the Cam, built to take traffic off Silver Street and crossing Sheep's Green and Coe Fen.
Fen Causeway is a short link road, built in the mid-1920s to take pressure off Silver Street. It joins Newnham Road to Trumpington Road and is a stretch of the A1134 ring road. Before it existed this ground was mostly wild fen, and the only route across was Coe Fen Lane, which the new road replaced.
Crossing the river
Traffic crosses the River Cam here, with Coe Fen on the north side and Sheep's Green on the south, so it passes through open common rather than past houses. Very few homes front onto it. It also crosses the Sheep's Green and Coe Fen nature reserve, and is the main point of access for both parts of that ground. The meadows flood, so expect soft or standing water after heavy rain.
Nearby
At the eastern end the causeway meets Trumpington Road, which runs south past the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. To the west, Newnham Road leads on towards Newnham College and the western colleges, and the Silver Street Bridge lies a little to the north.
