Brasley Bridge
The first bridge over the Cam upstream of Cambridge, linking Trumpington with Grantchester and rebuilt in 2015.
Brasley Bridge, also known as Trumpington Bridge, is reckoned the first bridge over the River Cam on its upstream course in Cambridge. It stands near Grantchester Road and links Grantchester with Trumpington.
History
The crossing has a short recorded chronology. In 1790 a wooden bridge was built near the ford, replacing an earlier brick structure. In 1954 the bridge was reconstructed so that it could carry motor traffic. Between February and September 2015 it was rebuilt once more, this time in reinforced concrete.
Nearby
The bridge ties Trumpington to the village of Grantchester. Grantchester Meadows, open fields along the western bank of the Cam, run from that village to Newnham Croft. Barton Road is the main road in the area, and Grantchester Road leaves it opposite Wolfson College on its way to the village, so a walk or ride along that road ties the village to the city.
