Peas Hill is a short street with Wheeler Street at its southern end and Market Hill at its northern end. It lies between two parallel streets: King's Parade to the west and Guildhall Street to the east.

A name that is not what it seems

It is not really a hill: the ground is lower than some of its surroundings. It was once a slope falling away towards the river, and the main fish market of the city was held on it. The likely origin of the name is the Latin for fish, pisces, rather than any pea trade; no evidence has been found of peas being grown or sold here.

Church, theatre and Guildhall

On the west side stands the church of St Edward King and Martyr, dedicated to Edward the Martyr, who reigned as king of England from 975 until he was murdered in 978. A sermon given here in 1525 is reported to have been the first of the English Reformation, and the church is sometimes called the "Cradle of the Reformation".

The Cambridge Arts Theatre is also on the street; the Cambridge Footlights are among the groups that have used it. To the east, on the corner of the Market Square, is the Cambridge Guildhall, which houses the city council.
