Sidney Sussex College
A small college with a friary's cellars, a rococo hall and Cromwell's connection.
A main shopping street, with Sidney Sussex College on one side and a Waterhouse bank building on the other.
Sidney Street is one of the main streets of the central shopping district. At its north end it meets Bridge Street and Jesus Lane; at the south-east end it becomes St Andrew's Street, by the corner of Hobson Street, close to Petty Cury.
Sidney Sussex College takes the north-eastern side of the street. Sussex Street runs off to the south-east of the college, and on the corner stands Montagu House, a tall and distinctive building that belongs to the college. Facing the college, Green Street heads west as a second shopping lane and gives a short link through to Trinity Street and St John's Street.
Holy Trinity Church stands on the south-western side, at the southern corner with Market Street, which in turn leads on to Market Hill.
Most of the shops are on the south-western side. Colleges are landlords along the street, and the building containing the city centre's main supermarket is Trinity College property.
One architectural highlight is the former Fosters' Bank, now a bank branch, designed by Alfred Waterhouse and built between 1890 and 1893. The name Fosters' is still carved over the doorway.
