From Magdalene Street / Thompson's Lane To Sidney Street / Jesus Lane City Centre 5 places listed

Bridge Street is a historic street on the north side of the city centre. Its north-western end meets Magdalene Street at Thompson's Lane, and its south-eastern end meets Sidney Street at the foot of Jesus Lane. It once carried straight on across the Great Bridge over the Cam; that stretch beyond the river is now Magdalene Street, named after Magdalene College.

Round Church and medieval courts

The best-known building is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Round Church, a Norman building of about 1130 at the junction with Round Church Street, where St John's Street comes in from the other side. Its model was the shrine of the same name in Jerusalem. At the opposite end of the street, beside Thompson's Lane, is St Clement's Church. St John's College lies to the south-west.

South of the street, between it, the line of St John's Street and the slim All Saints Passage, the small courts keep the plan of the earliest town centre, so a short walk through the side passages is rewarding.

The Hawks' Club, a members-only sporting club for university men founded in 1872, has its premises in Portugal Place, a cul-de-sac running north-east off the street.

Eating and drinking

The pub The Baron of Beef stands on the street, close to the river end. The riverside and bridge are a short walk away; see Magdalene Street for Magdalene Bridge and the oldest preserved houses on the route into the city from the north.
