Northampton Street
A street on the ring road north of the Backs, with Kettle's Yard, the Museum of Cambridge and St John's College nearby.
Northampton Street, part of the A1303, begins at Madingley Road and Queen's Road and finishes in the east at Castle Street, close to Castle Hill, Chesterton Lane and Magdalene Street. It belongs to the inner ring road, so traffic is heavy.
Along the street
University colleges own most of the southern side. The northern side has a mixture of council, private and student homes, and a pub. Southwards are the Cam and St John's College, among the biggest of the colleges. Historic buildings here include Kettle's Yard and the School of Pythagoras, and Honey Hill rises to the north.
At the Castle Street end stands the Museum of Cambridge, formerly the Cambridge & County Folk Museum.
Getting about
Being part of the ring road, Northampton Street is mainly a through route for traffic, but it also marks the boundary between the colleges along the river and the quieter area around Castle Hill. On foot, the Castle Street end links the museums here with Magdalene Street and the old town on the Cam.
