Fitzbillies began as a bakery on Trumpington Street in 1920. The name is a contraction of Fitzwilliam, a nod to the Fitzwilliam Museum a short walk up the road. The business is best known for its Chelsea buns, which the company sells in the cafes and, per its website, also by post.

A business that came back

The story is not one of uninterrupted trading. Fitzbillies went bankrupt in 1980 and again in 2011, and a fire in 1998 left the bakery partly closed for two years. After the 2011 failure a public appeal helped bring in a new owner, and it reopened.

More than one address

The company has since grown. A second cafe opened on Bridge Street in 2016, and a third on King's Parade in 2023. The official site currently lists the Trumpington Street, Bridge Street and King's Parade cafes along with one in Harston, outside the city.

Practical notes

The Trumpington Street cafe has separate menus for grab and go, brunch and lunch, afternoon tea, desserts and children, and the website links to Uber Eats ordering. The Bridge Street and King's Parade branches have grab-and-go menus, and King's Parade takes group bookings. Opening hours vary by branch and are published on the website's visit pages, so check before setting out.
